Nerve Conduction Studies

Nerve conduction studies (NCS) are diagnostic tests that evaluate the function of nerves in the body. We use NCS to diagnose conditions such as peripheral neuropathy, nerve entrapment, and motor neuron diseases. NCSs are performed by placing electrodes on the skin near the nerve that is being evaluated. A small electrical stimulus is then applied to the nerve, and the resulting electrical signals are measured and recorded. The speed and strength of the nerve signals provide information about the health and function of the nerve. NCS is performed in an outpatient or inpatient setting and is generally a safe and well-tolerated procedure. The results of NCS help us to guide further medical evaluation and treatment for the underlying condition. In combination with electromyography (EMG), NCS can provide a comprehensive evaluation of nerve and muscle function and is a valuable tool for diagnosing a variety of conditions affecting the nervous system.
